Sheet Bend & Double Sheet Bend

The Sheet bend is used to join together 2 lines of different thickness. It is useful when using a light heaving line to pass a heavier tow line to a boat or dock line to shore. The Double Sheet Bend, is no stronger than the single, but is more secure. The double sheet bend will even hold slippery nylon rope. Not for for climbing!
Sheet Bend

  1. Begin with a loop in the heavier line.

  2. Pass the bitter end of the smaller line up through the loop of the heavier line, around the heavier loop, and back through the loop in the small line.

  3. Tighten it up.

Both bitter ends should be on the same side (as shown).

Double Sheet Bend

  1. The thicker rope of the two is used to form a bight.

  2. The thinner rope is passed up through the bight.

  3. Then around the back of the bight.

  4. Now go around again before tucking under itself.

It is particularly useful when the thickness of the two ropes varies considerably, or when a more secure Sheet bend is required.
